Kisu Stars
Sifu Kisu, a 5th-generation Bak Siu Lum Pai disciple (Northern Shaolin Gate) descended from the esteemed Great Grand Master Ku Yu Cheong, has dedicated over 40 years of his life to the practice of Traditional Chinese Kung Fu. Through his daily practice, he has unlocked the secrets of transmitting the physical and energetic components of Kung Fu in a manner that is accessible and understandable to the Western mind.

As a master of Chinese martial arts, Sifu Kisu specializes in the Northern Shaolin Kung Fu style. His most notable achievement is his role as the chief martial arts director and consultant for the acclaimed animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra. Drawing from his lifelong experience in martial arts, Sifu Kisu created the bending styles featured in the series and connected them to various Chinese martial arts styles.

The Northern Shaolin style, popularized by Grand Master Kuo Yu Chang, is a comprehensive collection of Kung Fu techniques, encompassing both northern and southern styles. Grand Master Kuo Yu Chang meticulously choreographed these techniques into a curriculum that he taught at the Nam Jing Kung Fu Institute and his Canton Kung Fu Institute. Over the years, his curriculum expanded to encompass techniques from numerous styles. Grand Master Kuo Yu Chang, being highly skilled in the Northern style of Kung Fu, placed a strong emphasis on the Northern style of Shaolin Kung Fu in his teachings.
Since most martial arts origins, including that of Northern Shaolin, are passed down orally, we should consider them more legends than facts.

Northern Shaolin kung fu is one of the most prominent traditional Northern Chinese martial arts styles. Northern kung fu generally emphasizes long-range techniques, quick advances and retreats, wide stances, kicking and leaping techniques, whirling circular blocks, quickness, agility, and aggressive attacks.

The system teaches empty-hand techniques and weaponry through predetermined combinations, routines, or movements of sets.

Students learn the basics by practicing routines until the movements become natural and instinctive. Then, two or more man sets are practiced to train responses and applications of techniques learned from the sets. The practice sets/routines are not only practical but also graceful and artistic. The fluidity of the movements combined with acrobatic techniques are trademarks of Northern Shaolim Kung-Fu sets.

The Northern Shaolim style was made famous by the late Grand Master Ku Yu Cheung. There are many legends about him. According to some related by his close students, Master Ku’s father was an accomplished exponent of the Tan Toi (Snapping Kicks) Kung-Fu style. When he was young, Master Ku traveled throughout Northern China to learn all the Northern kung-fu systems. He was renowned for his Iron Palm techniques and the application of the long spear weapon. He organized all his learnings into the Northern Shaolim Kung Fu system we know today.
