Taoist Swordsman Michael Xià Chóngyì (夏崇义 (夏崇義)), received his Taoist name in July, 2010 at Purple Heaven Palace on Wudang Mountain, under Wudang Taoist Priest Zhou Xuan Yun. This event marked the first time a westerner would be inducted into Wudang Quanzhen Taoism formally, and the first time the Full 2+ hour induction ritual would be performed since the re-opening of the temples in the late 20th century. Inducted through Dragon Gate Sect, Xia’s Taoist name was presented to him by his Shiye (grand master), Li Guangfu, current president of the Chinese Taoist Association.
With over 25 years in the martial arts, and a dedication to both practicality and tradition, Swordsman Xia offers a glimpse into these specialized practices of Swordsmanship in the Taoist community along a dynamic view of Taoist development through scholarly and academic studies. As the elected Chair of the Taiji Fencing League, and head teacher of 6 Wudang Swordsmen Academy locations––in two countries––his life dedication to a peaceful sword-method seems something out of a Wuxia movie or a child’s dream for when they grow up! Nonetheless, as a Taoist first, and a swordsman second, it is Michael’s hope everyone who participates in his discussions and workshops will walk away with an enhanced relationship with themselves and a deeper understanding in their pursuits of this mysterious universe!
Michael is currently the Founder and Maestro at the
